Dry Ice Safety and Handling Guidelines
Understand how to store, handle and transport dry ice responsibly.
Important Safety Warning
Dry ice is approximately −78.5°C and can cause severe cold burns. It also releases carbon dioxide gas and must never be handled or stored without proper ventilation and precautions.
Personal Protective Equipment
Insulated Gloves
Never touch dry ice with bare hands.
Protective Eyewear
Shield eyes when breaking or scooping.
Long Sleeves
Cover forearms during handling.
Closed Footwear
Protect feet from dropped pieces.
Tongs / Scoop
Use tools where appropriate instead of hands.
Safe Storage
- Use an insulated but ventilated container.
- Never use an airtight container — sublimating gas builds dangerous pressure.
- Store in a well-ventilated area.
- Keep away from children.
- Do not store in a domestic freezer.
- Minimise unnecessary opening of the storage container.
Safe Transportation
- Keep the vehicle ventilated at all times.
- Avoid leaving dry ice inside a sealed passenger area.
- Secure the container so it cannot tip or slide.
- Clearly label the package as containing dry ice.
- Do not transport more than required without professional planning.
